Back in the early 1970s the business was established in the Dorset market town of Blandford Forum by Vic Kimber, the proprietor of a service station in Salisbury Road. The fleet name Damory came from the then nearby but now long closed D'Amory Arms, the pub's name reflecting a prominent Blandford family with historical connections across the years dating back to the Norman conquest in 1066.
According to rumour Vic accepted a minibus as payment of a debt owed to him. The resultant new transport operation started modestly with that first minibus, growing in time into a fleet of some dozen or so vehicles with about six coaches, the others mainly minibuses. With that growth more space was needed for parking the vehicles overnight and a depot was established at Clump Farm on the Blandford Heights industrial estate. The work included private hire, excursions, school contracts and in time Damory also operated a Thursday only Pimperne to Blandford circular market bus service (see the timetable illustration on the right), accessing unserved parts of the village away from the main A354 road, which was already served by Wilts & Dorset's regular buses from Salisbury to Blandford. Not known at this time but the village of Pimperne was to have great significance later in the Damory story.

Other  Blandford area independent operators come into the story as Damory eventually became the umbrella company for several other bus and coach businesses around Blandford.  Firstly we consider Oakfield Travel which was started by two chums after their days in the forces.  Always based in the market town of Blandford in Dorset, Joe Smith and Terry Greenslade started with taxis and grew through minibuses to the operation of full size buses and coaches. In that time honoured division of responsibilities, Joe ran the office - aided by Terry's wife Eileen - and Terry looked after the engineering side of things. The operation included private hire, school work, excursions and after deregulation in 1986 market-day bus services too.

Looking now at Stanbridge & Crichel(successor to a long standing country operation started back in the 1920s by Ernie Toomer of Manswood and then from 1957 taken over by Reg Essex trading as as Stanbridge Motor Services) had been acquired by Oakfield in 1989 from the Newsam family as then proprietors. Its operations included services linking the Cranborne and Crichel areas with Blandford, Wimborne and Poole.

In November 1992 Oakfield was sold to an unlikely buyer Guildford & West Surrey Buses, part of the Drawlane group. With a fleet of twenty or so vehicles new contracts were gained and operations expanded westwards to include inter alia two daily bus routes from the county town of Dorchester to Sherborne and to Yeovil (ex-Bere Regis & District and ex-Pearce of Cattistock respectively).  This territorial expansion was not successful and proved to be over-reach. Resulting changes of ownership a year later would bring Oakfield to Wilts & Dorset through Damory.

After running for twenty or so years Vic Kimber sold Damory Coaches to Wilts & Dorset in May 1993. The acquisition was soon followed by change and development by the new owners. Firstly the four minibuses of Stoneman of Belchalwell came into the fold. Then in November of the same year Wilts & Dorset acquired Oakfield Travel and Stanbridge & Crichel from Guildford & West Surrey and incorporated the ex-Oakfield and ex-Stanbridge operations into Damory. In January 1994 the routes of the Blandford Bus Company passed to Damory. At the time Wilts & Dorset was still an independent company having been a post-deregulation management buy out. Independent operator Blandford Bus had introduced several useful rural routes in a five year period starting in 1989 but perhaps unwisely four years later in 1993 proprietor John Cumming introduced an hourly route between Blandford and Poole which was perceived by Wilts & Dorset as direct competition. They responded by introducing competing services and Blandford Bus had to withdraw its Poole service after only two months. This was the beginning of the end and in January 1994 all their routes passed to Damory. This was the year when the Damory network first really came together with them representing several erstwhile  former independent Dorset rural bus operations (see the illustrations below).

Although now a subsidiary during the 1990s Damory retained its own identity while increasingly receiving vehicles transferred from elsewhere in the Wilts & Dorset group. The fleet included Bristol VRs, Leyland Nationals, Bristol LHs and a variety of coaches, with later arrivals including Leyland Olympians and other second-hand vehicles. The range of vehicles at the two Blandford depots reflected the mixed character of the operation, including schools, rural bus routes and private hire.
 
In August 2003 Wilts & Dorset was sold to the Go-Ahead Group. Thus Damory as its subsidiary passed too into Go-Ahead group ownership, eventually becoming part of Go South Coast, working alongside Poole based MoreBus. The Damory name and identity were retained permitting the historic operator's name to continue. Through the 2000s Damory's tradition of a varied fleet continued, with Bristol VRs, Leyland and Volvo Olympians, DAF / Ikarus buses, Volvo B10Ms, Plaxton coaches and later modern low-floor vehicles. A study of the movement of vehicles between Go-Ahead operating companies would no doubt make a history of the Damory fleet quite interesting!

In 2011, with changes following a substantial contract win, Damory moved away from its traditional Blandford premises, with the operation vacating its two Blandford depots at Sunrise Park (the former Oakfield base) and Blandford Heights (originally Vic Kimber's base) and moving a couple of miles down the hill to a larger combined site at Pimperne, just outside Blandford on the A354 towards Salisbury. This had previously been a haulage contractor's yard and the move marked the end of the Damory physical presence in Blandford itself. Pimperne remains very much associated with Damory today.

In October 2013 Damory took over operation of the long established Rossmore Bus route in the Upper Parkstone area of the town of Poole. Started by the indomitable Miss Foott in the 1920s and variously known across the years as the 'Rossmore Flyer' and the 'Monkeys Hump and Heavenly Bottom Express' this is of particular interest in Damory's story as previously the Rossmore route had been operated in turn by both the Stanbridge & Crichel and Oakfield businesses before those two operators became part of Damory's growth. Today the expanded Rossmore routes are operated by a Damory vehicle on behalf of MoreBus as their interworked routes 7A, 7B and 7C.

The character of today's operation has adapted and changed across the years, with a notable reduction in the number of bus routes following the county council's regrettable decision in July 2017 tto cease support of many rural bus services. Much grown from its origin with Vic Kimber's modest business, the Damory name is associated across Dorset with school contracts, coaching work and the remaining rural bus services, with vehicles based at both Taylors Yard, Pimperne and at an out station in the Dorchester area. Although now a subsidiary of Go South Coast alongside MoreBus and the reincarnated Excelsior, the individual historic operating identities are still apparent.
